No Internet In Snowstorm Blog!

Wow. This video is one of the more ingenious things I have seen lately. It perfectly describes modern marketing. Marketing is now all about facebook, twitter, and other social media outlets. The publishing industry will never die but must adapt! I believe it needs to offer more alternative reading devices such as the kindle. Our world today is a portable fast moving one and every industry is having to adapt.

I also believe more interesting ways of getting through to the youth, such as this one, need to be created. Videos like this are what the youth will actually consume (look at how big youtube is). Being able to reach the youth at a technological level is a must. I bet if you searching how many "tweets" the twighlight books have had, it would be insane! Technology is how the new generation communicates. They will read books, but they will chose the books they read through technological research.

Technology Blog

I think the topic of logic and reasoning is a wonderful area for students to dive into. I believe her strengths are her abilities to give the students choices on technology so that they are better able to pick one that suits their personal preference. This allows students to work within their comfort zone rather than forcing them to use something that they may not mesh particularly well with. I also believe using group work with these types of problems is extremely effective. It allows students to mesh their talents together and see problems from new angles which may broaden their perspective and inspire new ideas on methods to solve problems. The usage of the smart board allowed for the students to see a visual representation of the logic problem which makes all of the scenarios  easier for the students to sort out. Also, as one of the students stated, the smart board makes the class more fun and engaging.

Their were several weaknesses. I believe the layout of the room is a weakness. Students were very far away from the screen. I believe after completing the problem and while the presentations were taking place the students should have circled their chairs in the front of the class. This would have prevented the doodling that was clearly going on in the video. Next, I believe not allowing the children enough time to complete is a big weakness. What use is learning logic if you don't have enough time to fully work out the problem? The teacher also interrupts the students a few times when it was completely unnecessary. I would let the students attempt to fully flesh out their thoughts and would only step in to save them if they were way off and/or if some slight instruction was needed.

Overall I love the lesson idea because I believe logic is a topic that should be covered more heavily within the classroom. It is what we base most of our life decisions off of, isn't it?

Technology Journal Blog 3

While I began watching this the very first question that popped in my head was, "did they go over how to use a computer in a previous lesson"? I believe standard number one, that includes basic operations, was not covered properly. The first thing covered should be the absolute basics of computers. IE "here is how you scroll". I believe this point was solidified when the student said "I don't know how to make it any bigger" when creating the design that said "Springfield".

Also, instead of simply having students come up and scroll down, I would have allowed each student to complete the process in its entirety. This would allow for growth of knowledge and experience rather than just participation for the sake of participation. By including geographical elements I believe this teacher covered standard number two. But by looking up bland information such as record highs and lows this teacher is in now way stimulating creativity.

The instructor also handed out contradictory information by saying when you don't have anything to do you can talk about the assignment, then stating that you should be working on your portfolio. Kids need straight forward instruction, ambiguities need to be eliminated completely. Standard number five by using searches to find data sets and information for their projects.

Lastly I believe that asking "what did we learn today" is way to broad of a question. Children need a more directed question if you as an instructor want a detailed answer.

Trouble Online

Immediately I was struck at the severity of the penalties for downloading music. I don't know one person who doesn't download music/movies. I believe he made a good point in telling people to consider the offline equivalent. When you think about things on the computer based in real world situations the online actions take on a whole new light.

Online plagiarism was not a surprise to me though. You can go into any library at any college and witness it any day of the week. I believe it is a major problem in education today. It robs people of creativity. Instead of thinking and developing one's own ideas one simply takes someone else's ideas and acts as if they are their own. I never did realize people actually bought papers online. The fact that students are willing to pay for a paper is a horrific thought. Maybe the instruction needs to spark interest better? Or maybe students are just that lazy. It is a hard problem to diagnose. Turnitin.com may be part of the solution!

The points made on social networking are extremely valid. When looking for a job people need to be aware of the image their facebook/myspace/etc are portraying. Although when he said be aware of displaying your religious preferences I disagree.

All in all it was a very informative video. Makes you think about a lot of things that are done on computers that for some reason people just don't consider illegal or wrong.

NETS Student Standards and Reaction

Although this video was short I believe that many NETS standards could be seen. Some of the standards were implied due to the segment of the lesson that was being taught. For example, I believe the students showed knowledge of the basic operations and concepts because they were all operating calculators. Seeing that, I am forced to believe that the teacher has previously been over the basics and the students now have a working knowledge of the calculator. Also, the student picked to operate the calculator connected to the overhead possessed the knowledge to clear the calculator.

While social, ethical, and human issues weren't covered technology productivity tools were. Calculators are a clearcut example of a piece of technology being used to enhance a students learning experience. Problem-solving skills can also be more effective when using a calculator.

If I were the teacher there are a few things that I would have done differently. I would have been more organized. There is a point in the video where the instructor has to look for a paper she cannot find. This wastes her time and the students time. Also, I would most likely be the one using the calculator connected to the overhead. By doing this I am preventing any students from feeling ostracized while at the same time showing them the correct manner in which to use the calculator. Within the lesson I would have tried to apply what math we were conducting on the calculator to real world problems. I believe by applying the problems to real world situations a greater interest could be found in the subject by the students. Another technique I would use would be a short quiz at the end where the students could ask anyone in the classroom to help them with one problem. This would allow each student the opportunity to incorporate communication into their mathematical learning experience.

Unfortunately this video was too short to get much substance out of. Technology can be, I believe, the most powerful learning tool available if properly utilized.
